The majority of their coffee is bought direct from origin, building relationships with farmers to ensure full traceability of each of their coffees and generating better prices for the people that deserve it most.

The 39 Step sourcing process and quality control procedures are thorough - cupping coffees hundreds of times over to monitor how the coffee fares once traveled and how it continues to fare as they continue to roast.

This process of repetition - analysing a coffee profile, dissecting and improving it to be the best possible product we can fashion, enables them to provide you a cup of coffee to the highest quality.

A family of coffee producers - father, mother, sons, and in-laws all committed - Danilo Barbosa jointly with his sons, Vítor Marcelo and Sérgio Ricardo are the fourth and fifth generations of the family tradition on coffee production.

It all began with great-grandparent, Elias Barbosa, back then the coffee was produced for our family consumption and everyone worked on the fields, from the elders to the youngsters.

The entire family always had direct contact with the farms.

Located in Minas Gerais, inside Cerrado Region–the first coffee origin denomination in Brazil, characterised by its altitude and climate.

In this region the set of soil, topography, and climate are excellent for coffee production, for the seasons are well defined and their farms are on a medium altitude of 1100 meters.

Their coffee is produced in a responsible way, both socially and environmentally.

In face of our concerns, and always striving to improve their performance, we were certified by Rain Forest Alliance.

The Origin

The Basha Bekele from 39 Steps Coffee Roasters Originates from Ethiopia.

This is just one of the few lots produced by a group of small farms in the Sidama region of Southern Ethiopia.

The farms range between 3 and 12 hectares in size, and this year Buriso Amaje was assigned as their group leader.

Buriso coordinated the milling and export of the coffee alongside Falcon’s coffee importer team in Addis.

Basha, his wife, and two children own 3 hectares of coffee growing land near Bombe village in Bensa, Sidama.

Basha grows the 74160 variety which he received from the Jimma Agricultural Research Centre.

The coffee grows under the shade of native trees in a forest, and this variety is known to have very pronounced citrus and floral notes.

Basha picks and processes all of his coffee himself and within his family. The coffee cherries are placed on raised beds at his family home to dry for approximately one month.
