About Kin Coffee Roasters Review

Greg and Kate founded KIN Coffee after relocating from London to Kent during the pandemic, initially planning to convert a vintage horse trailer into a mobile coffee bar. When they discovered a family of robins nesting in the trailer’s wheel arch, they pivoted to roasting coffee from their garden’s converted potting shed. The couple became pioneers in sustainable coffee packaging, introducing the UK’s first glass-packaged freshly roasted coffee, which earned recognition from The Times as a “game-changing” brand.KIN Coffee specialises exclusively in naturally processed coffees, primarily sourcing from Latin America through partnerships with Cal’s Coffee and local farms including Fazenda Bom Jesus in Brazil. Their commitment to ethical sourcing and environmental responsibility extends from bean to cup. The roastery has grown from farmers’ markets to include a subscription service, wholesale operations, and their flagship coffee shop in Staplehurst, which recently expanded to offer Friday taco and cocktail evenings inspired by their travels to Mexico.

Coffee Origin

The Songbird coffee from Kin Coffee Roasters originates from the Rwenzori region of Uganda.

KIN Coffee sources this coffee directly from Agri Evolve, a purpose-driven organisation collaborating with farmers throughout Uganda’s Rwenzori region to enhance coffee quality whilst increasing producer incomes. Established in 2016, Agri Evolve was born from recognising a critical gap in the local coffee market: whilst farmers possessed excellent coffee, they lacked essential harvesting and processing infrastructure. Compounding this challenge, local traders offered only minimal cash payments, preventing producers from investing in improvements to their crops.

Agri Evolve transformed this dynamic by creating an alternative marketplace where farmers can sell unprocessed coffee cherries at fair market rates. The organisation reinvests export revenues into comprehensive programmes covering training, education, facilities, and equipment—all designed to help farmers increase both their yields and profits. Each coffee lot represents the collective efforts of 300-500 smallholder farmers, with individual holdings typically spanning 1.5-2.2 acres. This collaborative approach ensures that even the smallest producers can access better markets and resources for sustainable growth.
