Laggers Coffee Roasters
Laggers Coffee Roasters is the culmination of two childhood friends
With a shared passion for great coffee, David & James are on a mission to showcase some of the highest quality coffee.
With family ties to Colombia, one of the most bio-diverse countries on the planet, Laggers specialise entirely on sourcing, shipping and roasting Colombian coffee.
I have been lucky enough to visit Colombia and spend an extended amount of time there visiting many coffee farms.
With well over half a million coffee producing farmers, Colombia is one of the highest exporters of green coffee beans in the world.
Laggers have built personal relationships with hundreds of these producers and work with them and other exporters directly to buy at the source at a rate that is mutually agreed upon, well above fair trade value.
In addition, Colombia's unique climate offers year-round harvests, meaning they are always able to source the freshest and highest scoring coffees.
Having spent time with a number of different farmers who implement various social and ecological initiatives, David and James felt these were important practices to bring to the specialty coffee community.
By attributing the producers story on each of our coffees, we hope these insights become apparent with each and every cup.
The Origin
The El Mirador coffee from Laggers is of course from Colombia, in a village Picuma, just west of the beautiful Rio Suaza.
Finca El Mirador is owned and operated by Jose Jadir Losada and Kyle Bellinger.
When Kyle and Jose began their partnership at El Mirador, the farm was 11.7 hectares. Since then the farm has just about doubled to 23 hectares.
El Mirador has 2 year-round workers, one of whom is Jose's father-in-law, Carlos.
However, during the harvest seasons, El Mirador ramps their team up to about 25 pickers.
Finding pickers in this region of Colombia is not easy, as there is more lucrative work in coca (the plant from which cocaine is derived) in nearby Caquetá.
Kyle and Jose hope to encourage pickers to step away from this industry through offering wages far above the national average.
