The Colombian Medellin coffee from Coffee and check was an interesting number. It’s fragrance suggested a fairly dark flavour profile but the actual brew turned out to be something unexpected.
The coffee starts with a quick woodiness in the initial sips that only stays for a short while to then be overpowered by richer dark chocolate notes and cacao nibs. The mouthfeel is medium with a long aftertaste of raisins layered with more chocolate.
As the coffee cools it transforms into a lighter flavoured coffee, the acidity emerges and notes of fresh raisins (grapes) start to appear.
A curiously complex cup. It is quite unusual that a coffee initially releasing woody notes to then develop into a sweet and fruity profile.
Worked really well as an Italian coffee pot and with a cafetiere, the lack of paper in the filter brought all of the delicious oils through which highlighted those delicious rich tones.
