COFFEE REVIEWS

We are on a mission to sip, taste and review the UK’s best coffees.

Kickback Coffee Roasters

Kickback Coffee Roasting co.

Kickback coffee is a Cheshire based coffee roaster.

They showcase some of the finest sustainable coffees out there.

Kickback began when founder Alex started roasting coffee for his friends and family.

After receiving a great reception he decided to turn his coffee roasting hobby into a business.

That was 2017. Since then Kickback have been putting out a new single origin roast each month, sampling some incredible coffee beans and meeting some amazing people along the way.

At KBC, they try to get freshly roasted, high quality, unique tasting coffees out to you wonderful people. Helping to spread the incredible world that is coffee.

“Coffee is a natural product, grown in some of the most beautiful countries in the world. It is grown, harvested and processed by many amazing people and it is our job to ensure that everyone benefits along the way.”

The guys at Kickback are now full steam ahead. After chatting to Josh Williams (Barista Champion and Filtered Thoughts) who has recently joined the team it’s clear that these guys are now looking at competing with some of the big boys in the speciality coffee roasting scene.

The Origin

The Los Robles from Kickback Coffee Roasters Originates from the La Paz region of Honduras.

This seasons crop of Los Robles has produced a completely different profile to last years and highlights the amzing work carried out at origin.

Kickback's journey with Honduras started in 2020 with Josh, their Head of Coffee building relationships with Benjamin Paz, the manager of a coffee cooperative in Honduras.

In October 2020, Honduras was hit by Hurricane Eta.

During this time, Benjamin communicated his struggles through social media and spoke about the fundraiser he was doing in order to help with repairs.

Through organising fundraisers, Josh brought together 48 coffee professionals and held a raffle, kindly supported by many coffee companies.

In total, they raised £5500, which went directly to support the rebuilding of the farms and houses in Honduras.

Late last year, Benjamin Paz visited London to showcase the coffees from producers he has helped. Josh was lucky enough to head down to London to meet Ben at the event, held by Langdon Coffee Merchants.

One producer that stood out to us was Rodolfo Jimenez, who with the money raised, was able to continue producing some super tasty coffee.

Rodolfo has had many challenges whilst on his farming journey. At the time, he was struggling with how to control and manage a disease that had spread throughout his farm.

This resulted in him planting more resistant new plants - a hard lesson learned, but one he said he was grateful for.

The Origin

The Puebla from Kickback Coffee Roasters Originates from the Puebla region of Mexico.

Mexican coffee is fairly unusual on this side of the Atlantic with the majority of the coffee heading North to the USA.

It also doesn’t produce a great deal of speciality grade coffee with most of the coffee leaving the country sold as commodity coffee.

This however may change in years to come as Mexico has a huge amount of land that is perfect for growing high-grade speciality coffee as well as a large workforce of well-established coffee-growing professionals..

With fairly high traceability, Mexican coffee can have a broad range of flavours.

That said, a typical Mexican coffee is delicate and light in body.

It doesn’t usually possess the bold fruit notes compared to those of its Southern neighbours but instead can have a sweeter, chocolate flavour profile.
