Coffee Origin
The Turaco coffee from Trading Post Coffee Roasters originates from the Ngozi and Kayanza region of Burundi.
The coffee is sourced through Sucafina’s established partnerships in Burundi, working with washing station management companies like Bugestal and Greenco, as well as award-winning stations such as Kibingo and Nemba. Burundi’s coffee industry has experienced a remarkable renaissance since the civil war ended in 2005, with increased focus on specialty coffee production and farmers organising into cooperatives for greater self-determination.
The country faces unique challenges as a landlocked nation, where transportation costs to ports can exceed the cost of shipping coffee to Europe or the Americas, yet nearly 50% of Burundi’s 11 million population depends on smallholder coffee farming for their livelihoods. Sucafina supports sustainability initiatives in Burundi through the Kahawatu Foundation and innovative programmes like the Farmgate Project, which allows roasters to make additional cash payments directly to farmers for improvements such as livestock, health insurance, and solar panels.
