Comandante C40 MK4 Manual Coffee Grinder (Tom’s Review)
The Comandante C40 MK4 manual coffee grinder is probably leading the way in the league of manual coffee grinders when it comes to quality and consistency.
Its sharp design and sturdy build make grinding coffee by hand a sheer joy.
The smoothness of the grind is unparalleled, and the feel of the materials gives a premium touch - it’s slightly weightier than other manual grinders which adds an quality feel to it, as Boris out of Snatch puts it ‘if it doesn’t work you can hit him with it’.
The Comandante C40 MK4 is a fantastic investment for anyone who values precision in their coffee-making process.
The Comandante C40 MK4 in My Opinioin
With its top-notch materials and user-friendly design the Comandante C40 can elevate your coffee routine significantly.
Using this grinder feels like a step up in my coffee game. The design is sleek and the feel of the manual grinding action is surprisingly satisfying - I admit that I am a day to day electric coffee grinder guy and tend to only use manual grinders when traveling, however the Comandante C40 does make hand grinding much easier.
The grind consistency is impressive, making it perfect for all brewing methods (Espresso - French Press). I noticed that the new axle frame prevents any beans from getting stuck, a real plus.
While it may be pricier than some options, the quality and attention to detail genuinely make it worth it.

Design
There are several features that stand out and enhance the Comandante C40.
The new polymer grain container is a real game-changer. It's not only lighter than the previous glass option but also surprisingly robust.
Plus, its thermal insulation means I can even use it as a makeshift cup while brewing coffee outdoors. It’s a clever touch for anyone who loves to take their coffee on adventures.
The redesigned axle frame is another highlight. I was pleasantly surprised to find that grains no longer get stuck like they used to in other models I’ve tried.
This means less hassle when I’m grinding, and I can focus more on enjoying the process rather than dealing with interruptions. It’s evident that Comandante really paid attention to this feature in the MK4.
It fits comfortably in my hand, and the cranking motion feels natural. The wooden components provide a warm touch, which makes handling it enjoyable, unlike some of the more industrial-looking grinders I’ve tried.
I found the single lid for the dual containers a bit inconvenient. While it’s functional, switching between the two containers can get a tad tricky, especially when I need to clean up afterwards.

After using the Comandante C40 MK4 manual grinder, I can say it truly makes the coffee preparation experience enjoyable.
The grinding is incredibly smooth, and the design feels premium in hand. The new polymer container is a real plus; it's lightweight and durable. If you want fresh ground coffee at the push of a button, checkout our review of this portable electric coffee grinder by Hario.
Cleaning can be a tad messy if you’re not careful and in terms of price, it may seem steep, but the quality justifies the investment for anyone serious about their hand coffee grinding.
