Origin Coffee was established over 15 years ago in Cornwall by Tom Sobey, who had a background in the coffee industry, having worked closely with his father's coffee business during his upbringing.

After a trip to Australia in the early 2000s, where he experienced the thriving coffee culture, Tom was inspired to create Origin Coffee.

Since then, Origin Coffee has grown into a full team of industry professionals offering a world-class coffee program, six coffee shops, and an ever-expanding product range.

They are recognized as one of the pioneers of the third wave speciality coffee movement in the UK and remain at the forefront of the industry.

Origin Coffee sources its coffee directly from farms, following the authentic speciality coffee practice that rewards coffee growers rather than middlemen.

Origin Coffee endeavors to visit the coffee farms in El Salvador, Nicaragua, Colombia, and Brazil every year to establish strong relationships with the workers and their families and provide support where possible.

The stories behind their coffee are what set certain coffee roasters apart for the speaker, and Origin Coffee excels in this area.

Assembly are the quality and customer focused coffee roaster based in Brixton, London.

They are one of the few coffee roasters in the UK that are pushing the boundaries of each aspect of their business.

The Assembly roastery is housed in a 19th century fire station in the heart of London.

Launched in 2015 during the annual London coffee festival, Assembly are now showcasing their coffee on a global scale.

The biggest difference in how Assembly operates for me is their collaborations. When talking to their business manager, Ed, he explained how the team is in constant conversation with their customers, whether it’s a retail customer purchasing a 250g bag every other week or a wholesale speciality coffee cafe that orders dozens of kilos per week.

This conversation enables Assembly not only to build strong long lasting relationships and understand their customers wants and needs but also keeps their finger on the pulse of the specialty coffee industry.

These guys ship whole beans as standard but will grind the coffee for you if you specify in the comments box at checkout.

▻ Is Aeropress The Best Brew Method?

Like with coffee in general it's hard to say what is the best. It is all down to preference in taste, value, convenience, environment, etc.

For me the Aeropress is one of the best brew methods on the market. Not only can you achieve an incredible cup of coffee with very little experience using it but it is also robust and small enough to lob into your backpack on a weekend away.

Brewing the Aeropress is as easy as following some simple steps and plunging into your favourite cup.

You can refine your method as you become more comfortable using it and there are literally thousands of different ways you can tweak different variables to achieve a slightly different flavour. Checkout the Aeropress World Championships for some inspo.

▻ How To Brew Aeropress Coffee?

Brewing with your Aeropress straight out of the box is as easy as adding coffee grounds into the bottom of the brewing chamber and pouring water over the top.

Leave for around 30 seconds after stirring and screw on the filter holder with a pre soaked paper filter intact.

Place on top of your favourite (but sturdy) mug and plunge down until you hear a hissing noise.

Of course this is one of many ways to brew Aeropress and explained rather quickly. If you want to learn about our favourite method checkout our Aeropress Brew Guide.

▻ Best Grind Size For Aeropress Coffee

Unlike most methods of brewing coffee where the grind has a very small range of sizes that extract the optimal brew, Aeropress is a brew method where you can grind the coffee beans in many different grind sizes.

That said, we prefer our Aeropress coffee ground to a medium fine level. Something along the lines of brown sugar.

Choosing The Perfect Coffee For Your Aeropress

When selecting the best coffee for Aeropress, there are several factors to consider beyond just the grind size. While the Aeropress is remarkably forgiving, certain characteristics can help you achieve an exceptional brew.

The best Aeropress coffee typically has a well-rounded flavour profile that can stand up to the quick extraction process. Look for beans with notes of chocolate, nuts, or caramel as these tend to shine through beautifully in an Aeropress brew.

Medium roasts often work brilliantly, as they provide enough complexity without being overpowering. If you're purchasing Aeropress ground coffee, ensure it's fresh - ideally within a month of its roasting date - as this will significantly impact your final cup quality.

▻ Is Whole Bean or Ground Coffee Best For Aeropress?

This is a bit of a tricky question to answer.

On the whole, freshly ground beans will always make better coffee. Aromatic compounds are released during the grinding process, which leads to your steaming cup of joe having the ideal flavour and aroma notes that you’re looking for.

However, Aeropresses are designed for portability. This means that you’ve got two options.

The first option is to pick out a small hand grinder that you can take with you when you’re out with your Aeropress. This will allow you to brew with wonderfully fresh grounds, leading to a tastier brew.

There is one grinder that sticks out from the pack at the ideal one to take with you when you’re out and about with your Aeropress: the Rhino small hand grinder.

It’s designed to fit within the hollow plunger of the brewer, meaning that it will fit (along with the other accessories) within the handy bag that came with your Aeropress.

The other option would be to use pre-ground coffee for your Aeropress. We know that this is certainly sacrilege in some circles, but convenience is often king, even over flavour - that’s why instant coffee is so popular.

You could find a small airtight tub to store a small amount of coffee to drink within the day, ideally, one which fits within the Aeropress bag.

You could grind this coffee yourself at home before you head out of the house, or you could purchase pre-ground coffee and simply carry the bag with you. We wouldn’t recommend this, though, as that will be quite bulky and frustrating to carry around.

To sum up, we would suggest opting for a whole bean coffee that you like the taste of, as well as a portable grinder and an airtight container for the beans.

This will allow you to have the greatest possible flavour for your coffee, even though it is a little bulky and cumbersome.

▻ What Is The Best Country of Origin For Aeropress Coffee?

Picking your coffee beans by country of origin is something that’s been done for centuries. The coffee ground in different countries can have vastly different flavour notes depending upon everything from the soil to the rain.

It’s tough to give flavour notes for general regions, as it’s an attempt to use a pretty specific label for a large swath of the world. With that said, people have certainly done it with a great level of accuracy.

As a rule of thumb, South American coffees have good body and overall sweetness. To be slightly more specific, Brazilian and Colombian coffees are typically quite rich and earthy, with dark chocolate notes that are adored by many people.

As you get more northern on the American continent, the coffee gets brighter and more floral. Colombian beans are particularly notable - they usually have high levels of acidity, which can lead to fruity tastes in your final cup.

In Central America, coffee is generally more fruity overall. This is due to quite exceptionally high levels of acid in the coffee beans which, paired with the low sweetness of coffee, brings forward a taste reminiscent of good fruit.

However, this might not be the ideal coffee for most people, as it’s typically in short supply.

Most of the coffee is grown on smallholdings, or otherwise small farms, leading to the beans being quite rare over the course of an entire year.

The other place that coffee is largely grown is Africa. Africa is a huge landmass, with huge countries within it. This means that coffee from this continent has a large variation in flavour.

There is some of the best coffee beans in the world grown in Africa and some unique varieties of coffee plant. Depending on the origin you will find different flavours, Ethiopia and Kenya have some of the most interesting in my opinion.

To sum up, we would recommend looking at the country options near you and reviewing the brief tasting notes above to get a good idea of what you might like. Generally, we quite like a brighter, more acidic coffee first thing in the morning. Therefore, we could recommend a Colombian coffee for your morning brew!

▻ What Roast Level is Ideal For Aeropress Coffee?

This is another question that’s usually quite tricky to answer. The reason for this is that roast and brew work together equally to bring the flavours to your mug, rather than one being much more important than the other.

However, the Aeropress is a really forgiving brewing method. This is the reason that it’s the place a number of people start out on their coffee journey - a coffee beginner can make a great cup!

The Aeropress can truly handle any roast level to make a great cup. This does mean, though, that we would suggest avoiding roasts where alternative brewing methods lead to an exceptional cup.

For example, espresso is typically made with quite dark roasted coffee. This brewing method allows for a number of very specific flavours to be extracted, leading to a wonderful if small, cup.

When using the same beans in your Aeropress, you might be disappointed to find that it doesn’t taste quite the same.

Therefore, we would suggest using a different type of beans that isn’t suited to espresso-making (or most other types of brewing) so that you can appreciate it singularly, rather than comparing it to another cup unfairly.

Finding the best coffee for Aeropress is just as tricky now as it was when we started writing the article, though we hope we’ve given you a few pointers to help you along! Good luck with your coffee journey, and happy brewing

Can You Use Any Ground Coffee in an AeroPress?

Yes, you are able to extract a coffee with any particular ground coffee in an Aeropress.

That said, better quality coffee will produce a higher quality cup and coffee that is ground specifically for Aeropress will obviously produce a well balanced brew.

Common Aeropress Brewing Mistakes to Avoid

While the Aeropress is a forgiving brew method, there are some common pitfalls that can affect your coffee quality.

Using water that's too hot can lead to over-extraction and bitterness - aim for water just off the boil, around 80-85°C. Another mistake is pressing too hard when plunging; this can force fine particles through the filter and create an unwanted muddy taste.

When using coffee for Aeropress, ensure you're measuring your ratios consistently - a common error is eyeballing the measurements, which can lead to inconsistent results. Start with a 1:16 ratio of coffee to water and adjust to taste.

Also, while any coffee can work, using specially selected best Aeropress coffee from quality roasters will elevate your brewing game significantly.
