Ok, so coffee beans are a little sensitive.
If you don’t treat them in the right way they’re just going to produce a terrible cup of coffee.
Ask any coffee roaster about how slight variations in temperature, drum speed or airflow of a roast can effect the end cup of many coffees.
That all said, one thing that really upsets roasted coffee is the air, specifically oxygen.
Very similar to iron becoming rusty, when coffee beans come into contact with oxygen for too long they begin to oxidise and the complex soluble compounds that are delicately balanced begin to break down resulting in a less flavoursome brew.
This happens at a much higher rate as the coffee is ground, this is because the surface area of the coffee becomes increasingly larger as the coffee is ground finer.
Coffee should be stored in an airtight coffee storage vessel whether it’s a container, bag, tin, canister, can, whatever you find is easier for you.
As long as air cannot get in.
A couple of things to note about your choice of coffee storage.
Firstly, if your beans are only still fairly young and it has only been a couple of days since they were roasted then you may find that gasses are leaving the coffee beans.
This is natural and is the reason why coffee is normally aged for around 5 days in the roastery before brewing. In this case it may be worth opting for coffee storage with a valve to let the gasses easily escape.
You may also come across vacuum coffee storage. These are generally containers that usually have a manual method of extracting air out of the container. These are the next level of coffee containers and really do keep your coffee tasting and smelling fresh.
There are many places online to purchase coffee specific storage containers whether its a coffee gift for your Mum or for your coffee bar.
Many containers however are designed to keep any food or drink product fresh so you may come across a great food storage container that is perfect for storing coffee.
One really great coffee storage idea is using mason jars as coffee containers.
Mason jars not only have a rubber seal which keeps oxygen out but they also come in a variety of different sizes so you can have one jar for your kilo bags of espresso beans and a couple of smaller jars for your filter coffee beans.
They’re also pretty good value for money.
Another great coffee storage idea that I have come across is a date dial on the lid of the coffee container that signifies the date that coffee was either roasted or bought. This is perfect when you have a few different coffees and you need to know which one to use up first.
Coffee pod storage is typically a dispenser that can hold the pods vertically or horizontally.
Although coffee pods are sealed we would still recommend you storing them in a coffee pod storage container to make sure that the coffee stays as fresh as possible.

A common question that is asked in cafes throughout the world is can you keep coffee in the freezer?
Depending on how serious you take it, the answer is both yes and no. If you are a serious coffee geek and you happen to own a deep freeze then yes.
You can vacuum pack your coffee and deep freeze it.
The coffee maintains its freshness and subtleties once ground and brewed.
However, if you want to just stick the coffee into your freezer then no this will have a negative effect on the taste of your coffee.
This is because, although the freezer is good at taking moisture out of the environment to prohibit bacterial growth, the delicate balance of moisture in the coffee beans creates the flavour profile of complex tasting coffee.
The condensation on icy coffee when defrosted will also get reabsorbed into the coffee and taste flat and dull.
You will need a container that is light and fairly small for when you go camping.
You also need to decide whether you will take a grinder or a bag of pre ground coffee. Check out this coffee storage canister from Coffee Gator. It is light and durable, perfect for shoving in a backpack.
Coffee can be stored overnight as long as it is in an airtight container.
If you leave coffee open and at the mercy of oxygen in the air you will end up with a flavourless coffee.
Even vacuum-sealed coffee goes bad! There will still be a tiny amount of oxygen in between the coffee beans of vacuum sealed coffee and this will eventually oxidise and degrade the coffee.
But you can expect this to happen much slower than coffee packed in a regular bag, maybe 3 months rather than 1 month.
You’re gonna need a bigger boat! Many storage containers only hold up to 250 grams of coffee and that is no good if you like to buy yours in kilo bags.

Yes, Glass containers work really well at storing coffee. As long as the container is kept out of direct sunlight and at room temperature then the coffee will be at its best.
Even better if the glass container has a vacuum seal or at least is airtight.
