Short answer: the best coffee pod subscription in the UK is Difference Coffee for rare, single estate coffee delivered monthly. Grind is the most flexible, Origin and Volcano are the pick for home compostable pods, and Colonna sends a new single origin in every range each month. Every subscription here works with Nespresso Original machines.

Around 20 years ago our morning coffee was revolutionised. A small capsule of ground coffee let us make something close to espresso at the push of a button, and a rather elegant looking Hollywood actor made it a household name almost overnight.

Pods win on convenience, even over instant coffee or coffee bags. The catch has always been what is inside them. Most supermarket pods are filled with the lowest grade coffee and roasted dark enough to taste of little else. Now don’t get me wrong, I have drunk my fair share of commodity pods over the years (they take me straight back to studying at uni), but a handful of brands now put proper speciality coffee in a capsule and post it to you on a schedule. Those are the ones below.

Why trust us?

I’ve spent 13 years in coffee as a barista and roaster, wrote The Home Barista, and taste hundreds of coffees a year choosing what goes into Batch boxes. At Batch we showcase the best independent roasters in the UK through our coffee subscription, so we know what makes a subscription worth keeping. We only recommend coffee we would happily drink ourselves.

How to choose a coffee pod subscription

  • Check your machine. Every subscription here is for Nespresso Original machines. Vertuo machines use a different, barcoded capsule, so none of these will fit.
  • Decide where the pods will go. Home compostable pods need a compost bin, while aluminium pods need to reach a recycling scheme. Pick the one that matches what you will actually do with them.
  • Look at the flexibility. The best subscriptions let you change the frequency, skip a delivery or pause without a fuss.
  • Think about variety. If you like the same coffee every morning, a single blend is fine. If you get bored, Colonna, Halo and Difference Coffee keep things interesting.

For a wider look at the pods themselves, including which are best with milk, see our guide to the best Nespresso pods. If you would rather have beans, our best coffee subscriptions roundup covers those.

Compostable or recyclable: which pods are better?

Home compostable pods break down in a garden compost bin, but check the small print, as some are not accepted in council food waste. Industrially compostable pods need a commercial facility, which in practice means your council has to collect them. Aluminium pods protect the coffee well and can be recycled again and again, as long as they reach a recycling scheme.

For aluminium and plastic pods, Podback is the UK’s pod recycling service, set up by Nespresso, Nescafé Dolce Gusto and Tassimo, with kerbside collection in some areas and drop off points elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best coffee pod subscription in the UK?

Our top pick is Difference Coffee, which delivers rare, single estate coffee in Nespresso Original compatible capsules every month. Grind is the most flexible option, Origin and Volcano are best for home compostable pods, and Colonna sends a new single origin in each range every month.

Does Nespresso have its own subscription?

Yes. Nespresso runs its own coffee subscription in the UK for its own capsules, and a machine subscription that bundles a machine with regular coffee deliveries. It only covers Nespresso’s own coffee, so for speciality roasters you need one of the subscriptions on this list.

Are coffee pods recyclable?

Some are. Aluminium pods can be recycled through schemes such as Podback, and some brands, including Origin and Volcano, make home compostable pods instead. Many cheap supermarket pods are made from plastic that is hard to recycle.

Are coffee pods universal?

No. Each machine system uses its own pod shape. Nespresso Original compatible pods, like every pod on this list, will not fit Vertuo, Dolce Gusto, Tassimo or Keurig machines.

Can coffee pods be used twice?

No. Once the coffee in a pod has been brewed, the flavour has been extracted, and a second run just gives you weak, bitter water. Used grounds from compostable pods can go straight on the compost heap.

What is the difference between coffee pods and capsules?

In the UK the words are used interchangeably. Strictly speaking, capsules are sealed cups of ground coffee like Nespresso’s, while pods are soft, paper wrapped discs of coffee, but most brands call capsules pods.

Are coffee pods the same as K-Cups?

No. K-Cups are made for Keurig machines, which are popular in the United States, and they will not fit a Nespresso machine.

Pods or beans?

Pods are about convenience, and there is nothing wrong with that. But freshly ground beans will always beat the best pod, and if you have a refillable capsule, a bag ground for espresso will get you most of the way there.

Fancy trying the beans behind the pods? Every fortnight we send two speciality coffees from different independent UK roasters, whole bean or ground for however you brew, with tasting notes on every bag. Use BATCHBREW10 for 10% off your first box. Start your coffee subscription
