Pact were one of the first coffee subscriptions in the UK, and they did a lot to get people used to the idea of fresh speciality coffee landing on the doormat. That made life easier for everyone who came after them, us included. So yes, I’m biased. Obviously. But I would rather tell you what Pact are good at than pretend they aren’t.
I have spent 13 years as a barista and roaster, wrote The Home Barista, and taste hundreds of coffees a year choosing what goes into Batch boxes. Here is what Pact does well, where it falls short, and who should sign up.

Who are Pact Coffee?
Pact started in 2012, when founder Stephen Rapoport began roasting at home because he couldn’t find properly fresh coffee in London. It began life as YourGrind and became Pact in 2013, when it moved into Bermondsey with seed funding behind it. In 2018 roasting moved to a bigger roastery in Haslemere, in the Surrey Hills, which Pact says is now carbon neutral for its own operations. You can read their side of the story on Pact’s about page.
Pact buys through direct trade, working with more than 180 growers and cooperatives across nine countries, and says it pays every grower more than the Fairtrade base price. It became a certified B Corp in 2022 and recertified in autumn 2025 with a higher score. For a company of its size, that is a solid record.
How the Pact subscription works
You build a plan on Pact’s website: choose how you brew, how often you want coffee and which range you want, and they roast and post it. Each delivery is one 250g bag, which fits through the letterbox.
- House: Pact’s everyday coffees, from £7.95 a bag on a plan.
- Select: a rotating menu of coffees from around ten countries, £8.95 a bag on a plan.
- Micro lot: small, rarer lots at the top of the range, at a higher price.
- Decaf: decaffeinated at origin, available on any plan.
Pact say subscribers save at least £1 on each order compared with buying one off. You can skip a delivery, pause, change your coffee, ask for your next bag as soon as possible or cancel from your account, with no minimum term. Unpause before 1pm on a weekday and Pact say your coffee is roasted and sent the same day.

What does Pact coffee taste like?
Pact only buys speciality grade coffee, meaning beans that score 84 points or more on the industry’s 100 point scale. The range is built to be approachable, and the names of their best known espresso blends, Bourbon Cream and Fruit & Nut, tell you a lot about the style: sweet, comforting and happy with milk. Select and Micro lot are where the more unusual coffees live.
Customers rate them highly: 4.6 out of 5 on Trustpilot and 4.7 on REVIEWS.io. In the reviews we read, complaints were more often about price or an order going wrong than about the coffee itself. That fits what you would expect from a roaster working at scale for a broad audience. If you like a sweet, chocolatey cup with milk, that is no bad thing. If you want a natural Ethiopian that tastes like a bowl of blueberries, you will need to dig into Micro lot, or look elsewhere.
The good and the not so good

- Flexibility. Skip, pause, swap or speed up a delivery whenever you like. Few subscriptions make it this easy.
- Freshness. Coffee is roasted to order in Surrey and posted quickly.
- Ethics you can check. Direct trade, above Fairtrade base prices and B Corp certification.
- Choice of grind. Five grind options, so it works for any brewer.
- Happy customers. 4.6 out of 5 on Trustpilot from more than 3,000 reviews.
What could be better
- One roaster’s style. Every bag comes from Pact, so you won’t taste how other roasters approach coffee.
- It plays it safe. The range is built to please a lot of people, so fans of wild, experimental coffees may find it a bit tame.
- Pricing takes some finding. Prices differ between plans and pages, so check the total at checkout.
- Pods are limited. Two espresso blends, and Nespresso Original machines only.
- Gift vouchers expire. Some reviewers have been caught out by gift vouchers expiring after 12 months.
Is Pact good value?
A 250g bag makes about 16 cups at a typical 15g dose. At £7.95 a bag that is roughly 50p a cup, and around 56p for Select. That is a fraction of the price of a café flat white, and comparable with most UK speciality subscriptions.
Where Pact wins on value is convenience: free delivery on plans and complete control over timing mean you rarely end up with too much coffee or none at all. Where it is less strong is variety for your money. If part of the fun for you is discovering new roasters, a multi roaster subscription gives you more for a similar price.

Pact also sells Nespresso compatible pods filled with its two best selling espresso blends, in recyclable aluminium. They fit Nespresso Original machines, not Vertuo. Verdict: is Pact Coffee worth it?
Choose Pact if you want good, reliable coffee on your own schedule, you like the idea of one company you can trust with sourcing, and you would rather not think about it once it is set up.
Look elsewhere if you want variety. Pact is one roaster with one house style. If tasting how different roasters work is the point, a multi roaster box like Batch will suit you better.
Pact do the basics very well, and for a lot of households that is exactly what a coffee subscription should be. If someone just wants good coffee without the homework, Pact is a sensible shout. If you want your coffee to be a bit of an adventure, that is what we built Batch for.
